The exhibition Them and us by Abdul Abdullah explores the untold stories of young Muslim-Australians. It uses a range of media including photography, video and installation to explore the sometimes-tragic, sometimes-funny and often bizarre journeys these young Australians take on their paths to adulthood. These young people have grown up in a politically-hostile environment and living up to the ideals of your religious community often compromises the values of the larger Australian society, and vice versa. Torn between factions the subjects of this investigation forge their own paths and redesign the set structure to accommodate their unique cultural positions. The exhibition sets out to put a human face on young Muslim-Australians, it is not about religion, it is about people. The title Them and us does not refer to any particular ‘them’ or ‘us’, but rather refers to a mentality that encourages division and universally informs cultural and political understanding.
